Fred Herzog (b. 1930)
German-born and a medical photographer by profession, he is known for his photographs of Vancouver street scenes and his bold use of colour during the 1950s and 60s. In this respect he was a pioneer of colour in art photography, alongside Stephen Shore and William Eggleston.
Richard Kalvar (b.1944)
Brooklyn-born photographer who lives and works in Paris. Helped to found Viva agency, member of Magnum, extensive street/candid portfolio in b/w.
André Kertész (1894-1985)
Hungarian photographer who emigrated to the US in 1936 after working for a decade in Paris. His street photos from his Paris period are legendary but honours came late in life.
William Klein (b.1928)
Born in New York to parents from Hungary, he portrayed the city "in the raw" in b/w film photography and produced books on: Rome (1959), Moscow (1961), Tokyo (1962).
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965)
American documentary photographer and photojournalist whose work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Depression era made her famous.
Saul Leiter (1923-2013)
American master of candid colour photography which he first exhibited in the 1950s at The Club, the home of Abstract Expressionism in New York.
Helen Levitt (1913–2009)
Grew up in Brooklyn, NYC; inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson; worked with Walker Evans; photographed Spanish Harlem and the Lower East side.
Vivian Maier (1926–2009)
Chicago nanny whose work was discovered in 2007 and gradually released to great acclaim. Used a Rolleiflex 6×6 camera, taking well over 100,000 photos.
Paul McDonough (b.1941)
American photographer, captured the quirkiness of NYC in the 1960s.
Joel Meyerowitz (b.1938)
American photographer inspired by Robert Frank, but became a pioneer of street photography in colour, celebrated in his book Cape Light (1979).
Boris Mikhailov
Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine where he lived and worked for many years. Generally recognised as one of top photographers of the former Soviet Union.
Daido Moriyama (b.1938)
Japanese photographer who has worked the back streets of Tokyo for a lifetime. Was the most prominent contributor to Provoke magazine, 1969 (3 issues), with a photograpic style of "areh-bureh-bokeh" ("grainy, blurry, out-of-focus").
Trent Parke (b.1971)
Australian photographer, a member of Magnum and In-Public, winner of four World Press Photo Awards, who work on the streets of Sydney resulted in the book Dream/Life (1999).
Martin Parr (b.1952)
Popular British street photographer, inspired by Tony Ray Jones and known for his satirical scenes of British life.
Chris Steele-Perkins (b.1947)
British photojournalist and street photographer, noted for his for his work with relief organizations and travel assignments.
René-Jacques (1908-2003)
Cambodian-born French photographer, best-known for his dramatic views of Paris, taken in the mid-20th c. He was a member of Le Groupe des XV (a group of 15 French photographers).
Raghu Rai
Indian photographer, born in Jhhang (now part of Pakistan). Shoots colourful, complex images. Nominated by Henri Cartier-Bresson to join Magnum Photos in 1977. On Instagram.
Willy Ronis (1910-2009)
French photographer of east European descent. Famous for his photographs of Paris. In later years he became a photography teacher in Provence.
Joel Sternfeld
NYC photographer. Known for his large-format colour photographs documenting life in the USA. Used iPhone for his series "iDubai" (2008-09). On Instagram.
Alex Webb (b.1952)
Magnum photographer, best known for street images with rich color and complex compositions and for his book The Suffering of Light (2011).
Garry Winogrand (1928–1984)
American street photographer. One of the most prolific of all photographers, he is said to have taken over 5 million images, most of them on the streets of NYC.
Michael Wolf (b.1954)
German artist and photographer who has worked primarily in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris. Always inventive he examines the density of city life and even exploits the creative possibilities of Google Street View.
